How to Prepare for Your Branding Photography Session

A branding photography session is an essential investment for your business. It provides high-quality images that represent your brand and help you connect with your audience. However, to make the most out of your session, preparation is key. Proper planning ensures you get images that truly reflect your brand’s identity and message. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for a successful branding photography session.

1. Define Your Brand Identity

Before stepping in front of the camera, you need to be clear about your brand identity. Ask yourself:

  • What are your brand values?

  • What emotions do you want your audience to feel when they see your images?

  • What colors, styles, and aesthetics represent your brand?

Having a well-defined brand identity will help guide the creative direction of your photoshoot, ensuring your images align with your business’s overall vision. BTW, if you work with me, I send you a questionnaire that helps you define this and so much more, if you haven’t already done so.

2. Set Your Goals for the Session

Determine what you want to achieve with your branding photos. Consider:

  • Where will the photos be used (website, social media, print materials)?

  • What types of shots do you need (headshots, team photos, lifestyle shots, product images)?

  • Do you need horizontal, vertical, or square images for specific platforms?

Having clear goals will help your photographer capture images that are versatile and usable across different platforms.

3. Choose the Right Photographer

Not all photographers specialize in branding photography, so it’s crucial to find someone with experience in this niche. Lucky for you, you’re in the right place! If you want a better idea, reach out and I can show you examples from my portfolio of other brands whose brand identity I’ve helped elevate. And if we aren’t a good fit, no worries! I can still give you some pointers of what you should look for to make sure your photographer will be a good investment for your brand.

4. Plan Your Outfits

Your wardrobe plays a significant role in how your brand is perceived. Here are some tips:

  • Choose colors that complement your brand palette.

  • Avoid busy patterns and overly trendy styles that may look outdated quickly.

  • Bring a variety of outfits to give you multiple looks.

  • Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable.

5. Select the Perfect Location

Your location should reflect your brand’s personality and industry. Some popular options include:

  • Your office or workspace

  • An outdoor setting that aligns with your brand

  • A professional studio with a clean background

  • A coffee shop or co-working space for a more casual look

Discuss with your photographer which locations will best convey your brand story.

6. Gather Props That Represent Your Brand

Props help tell your story and add depth to your images. Consider including:

  • Branded items (notebooks, business cards, products)

  • Tools of your trade (laptop, camera, paintbrushes, etc.)

  • Lifestyle elements (coffee mug, plants, books, etc.)

Make sure your props are relevant to your industry and enhance your branding message. I am a huge fan of putting a box in your office and every time you use something for your business over the 2 weeks prior to your session, put it in the box. It takes so much of the stress and anxiety of choosing props away and it’s your own stuff you use all of the time - so it’s more authentically YOU!

7. Prepare Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup can make a big difference in how polished and confident you look in your photos. Consider hiring a professional stylist or practicing a look that enhances your features without being too dramatic. If your brand has a natural, laid-back vibe, opt for a minimalistic look that aligns with your identity. If you want someone who understands makeup for photography, I know an excellent HMUA (hair and makeup artist) who will come to the studio and pamper you here.

.8. Practice Posing and Expressions

Many people feel uncomfortable in front of a camera, but practicing beforehand can help. Try:

  • Standing in front of a mirror to test different poses.

  • Watching videos on confident body language.

  • Smiling naturally and experimenting with facial expressions.

Your photographer will guide you, but feeling prepared will make you look more natural and relaxed during the session.

9. Create a Shot List

A shot list ensures you capture everything you need and helps keep the session organized. Some essential shots to consider:

  • Professional headshots

  • Candid action shots of you working

  • Team or group photos

  • Behind-the-scenes moments

  • Lifestyle shots that reflect your brand personality

Review the list with your photographer to ensure nothing is overlooked.

10. Get a Good Night’s Sleep and Stay Hydrated

Being well-rested and hydrated will help you look and feel your best on the day of your shoot. Avoid heavy meals the night before and start the day with a nutritious breakfast to maintain your energy levels.

Conclusion

A successful branding photography session requires thoughtful preparation. By defining your brand identity, setting clear goals, selecting the right photographer, and planning every detail in advance, you’ll ensure you get stunning, high-quality images that elevate your business. I know. It seems like a lot of work but I promise, investing time in preparation will make your session smooth, enjoyable, and ultimately, a valuable asset for your brand’s growth.
